Call for papers: Åre Risk Event 12-14 March 2013
December 15, 2012

Call for papers: December 23, 2012 is the deadline for abstracts for the Åre Risk Event, to be held 12-14 March 2013.

Welcome to Åre Risk Event which will be held for the second consecutive year at hotel Holiday Club in the ski-resort Åre, Sweden.

This year’s conference theme is “Risk and Crisis Management” and the conference focuses on the future management and leadership in a changing society. What characterizes the management and leadership in a socially heterogeneous society that is constantly exposed to risks and crises? Also, questions on power and the role of social media is brought to a head.

The conference gathers researchers, entrepreneurs, politicians and representatives of public and voluntary organizations to exchange knowledge about the risk and crisis management in our society. The programme is still tentative but will consist of lectures and paper sessions, mixed with workshops and exchange of experiences in smaller groups.

The conference seeks to include researchers on an interdisciplinary basis, all with an interest in risk and crisis research. We welcome papers with a broad range of perspectives on topics like, for instance,
  • management of operations that includes unknown actors,
  • management of organized as well as unorganized volunteers,
  • management of temporary organizations,
  • power and management/leadership during risk and crisis.
Abstracts, with a maximum of 200 words plus full name, department/institution, and the author(s) contacts, should be sent by December 23 2012 to the following e-mail address: johanna.ekroth@miun.se

Notification of acceptance will be announced by January 12 2013

Call for papers "Risk, Uncertainty and Policy"
October 09, 2010
Inter-disciplinary Conference: Risk, Uncertainty and Policy

Location: Östersund, Sweden. Date: 23-25 March 2011

Sociology of Risk and Uncertainty Research Network (ESA)

Inter-disciplinary Conference

Risk, Uncertainty and Policy

Mid-Sweden University, Östersund

23-25 March 2011

Keynote speakers:

This is a call for papers for a conference which will explore understandings of risk and uncertainty in their relation to policy (www.riskanduncertainty.net/esa/).

Conceptions of risk and uncertainty influence the formation of policy at various levels - while policy-making may, in turn, legitimate or otherwise influence societal perspectives of risk and uncertainty. That policy approaches to similar phenomena vary so much across countries highlights the constructed nature of risk governance, and also the politico-institutional structures in which responses to risk are embedded. The political-economy of policy-making ensures that certain groups within society are better able to influence policy than others, meaning certain risks are prioritised while others are neglected. Correspondingly policy decisions distribute risks, and impact on associated perceptions, unevenly across society in terms of class, ethnicity, gender and age.

The conference seeks to include papers which explore these and related topics across a range of empirical contexts and from a number of theoretical angles. Themes will include: sense-making of risk; health risks; mental health policy; risk governance; risk and crime; professional approaches to risk; risk management and uncertainty; inequality and risk; risk and everyday life; and social theories of risk.

The conference will take place in Östersund, will be hosted by Mid-Sweden University’s Risk and Crisis Research Center and is co-sponsored by the European Sociological Association. For those that want to stay on for the weekend, the location will be very close to the top ski resort in Scandinavia - Åre.

Timetable

Abstracts, limited to 200 words plus full name, institution, and the author(s) contacts, should be sent by Nov 31st, 2010 to the following e-mail address: larsake.lindstrom@miun.se Notification of acceptance will be announced by December 15th.

Registration and registration fee

Participants will be required to pay a nominal registration fee of 50 Euros (100 Euros for non-members of ESA) by 15 January 2011. This will include coffee breaks, lunch and one dinner. Late-registration (from 16th Jan 2011 onwards) will cost 100 Euros (150 non-ESA members).

Travel and accommodation

Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements and hotel reservations. Conference organizers will provide information about accommodation, as well as suggestions about different alternatives for travelling to Östersund. This information will be made available nearer to the end of the year.
